And then there was one...

Rue McLanahan, the actress who played the slutty one in The Golden Girls, has died aged 76.

Her Blanche Devereaux had aspirations to being a Southern lady, but that was just a thin veneer over her voracious sexual appetite. She was in all but body an archetypal gay man.

Those of you who are mere striplings probably can't understand the impact of 1985's The Golden Girls: here was a series that showed old(er) people -- and women, to boot -- as sexual beings, something that hadn't appeared on telly until then.

And, because they were old, they were licensed to be crude and smutty in ways young and beautiful starlets wouldn't have been allowed. And it was witty, too.

In her own words:
People always ask me if I'm like Blanche. And I say, "Well, Blanche was an oversexed, self-involved, man-crazy, vain Southern Belle from Atlanta -- and I'm not from Atlanta".
Thanks, Rue.
