Floating my boat

Setting aside the facts of the incident itself (though on the face of it Turkey's description of this as an act of "state terrorism" doesn't seem too far off the mark), here's a screen grab of The Guardian's web article:


A "floatila"??

In the body of the story they get it right. But on reflection, I can't help wonder if this isn't a deliberate attempt to create a new word. There is, at least, some sort of underlying logic.
